The picture on the right shows a 132kV pylon insulator. This example is constructed with 9 individual glass insulators. These link together in a chain to form the complete insulator with the correct insulator properties for the applied voltage.  

The interlocking arrangement can be seen in the  picture below showing one segment from a larger insulator.  The pin, which is just visible, prevents the insulators uncoupling, when it is inserted.
